Reconstructing the infilling history within Robert Sharp crater, Mars: Insights from morphology and stratigraphy

چکیده
Recent mineralogical studies suggest past aqueous activities in the 150-km-wide Robert Sharp impact crater, western neighbor of Gale crater on Mars. Despite their similarities, and craters display very different morphologies. Using high-resolution orbital images, we made morphological stratigraphical analyses, as well age determinations showing that has experienced a complex geological history. This includes formation fretted terrain deposition airfall material during early – middle Hesperian epoch. The presence valleys, fan deltas, numerous minerals indicates fluviolacustrine episodes epoch persisted episodically until Amazonian between 1.3 Ga 500 Ma. Thus, have contemporaneous phases possibly up to two billions years after lacustrine environment recorded by Curiosity rover within crater.

Stratigraphy and Evolution of Delta Channel Deposits, Jezero Crater, Mars
Introduction: The Jezero impact crater hosted an open-basin lake [1] that was active during the valley network forming era on early Mars [2]. This basin contains a well exposed delta deposit at the mouth of the western inlet valley (Fig. 1) [1,3-5]. The fluvial stratigraphy of this deposit provides a record of the channels that built the delta over time. Here we describe observations of the str...
متن کاملConstraints on the Formation and Alteration History of Mt. Sharp, Gale Crater, Mars, from a New Crism Mineral Map
Introduction: The primary target for the Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) rover investigation in Gale Crater is the 5 km thick stack of layers that make up the central mound of the crater, known officially as Aeolis Mons and informally as Mt. Sharp [1,2]. Previous near-infrared spectral investigations using the Compact Reconnaissance Imaging Spectrometer for Mars (CRISM) have shown that the northw...

متن کاملReconstructing the transport history of pebbles on Mars
The discovery of remarkably rounded pebbles by the rover Curiosity, within an exhumed alluvial fan complex in Gale Crater, presents some of the most compelling evidence yet for sustained fluvial activity on Mars. While rounding is known to result from abrasion by inter-particle collisions, geologic interpretations of sediment shape have been qualitative. Here we show how quantitative informatio...
